Teeth Fillings Q & A

by Chris Robertson, DDS

What Are Fillings?

Typically, tooth decay, or cavities, create small holes in our teeth. A dentist can easily remedy this situation with a tooth filling. Your Chattanooga dentist will fill the small hole to prevent further tooth decay from spreading. Fillings are a common, easy procedure that most patients need at some point during their life. It’s important to act quickly with cavities to prevent any further dental treatment like the loss of a tooth or dental implant.

Are There Different Types of Fillings?

Every cavity is different and therefore may need a different type of treatment. Depending on the tooth decay you are experiencing, our dentist may recommend either a metal filling or a tooth-colored filling.

  • Metal Fillings: Metal fillings are strong and inexpensive, however, they are the most noticeable options and tend to be the least aesthetically pleasing. With your dentist, you can choose from either amalgam or cast gold metal fillings. Both are fairly similar and only differ in color.

  • Tooth-Colored Fillings: Tooth-colored fillings are the most aesthetically pleasing fillings as they match the color of your teeth and they truly cannot be noticed. However, these fillings tend to be more expensive and less strong compared to metal fillings. There are three types of tooth-colored fillings including composite, porcelain, and glass lonomer fillings.

What to Expect During a Tooth Filling Procedure?

Fillings are rather simple and relatively pain-free. Initially, your Chattanooga dentist will check your teeth to determine the level of tooth decay. Next, we will numb the area to ensure you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. With a dental drill, we will remove all the decay to completely clean the tooth. Lastly, depending on your tooth and preference, we will seal the tooth with a filling that fits your needs and dental health.

What About After My Filling?

Once your filling procedure is complete, there are a few small details to note. The numbness will wear off in a few short hours and we recommend eating on the other side of your mouth and avoiding hot or cold liquids. For a couple of days or a few weeks, you may experience some sensitivity, but this is normal and nothing to worry about it. As always, keep up your normal brushing and flossing, and if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Chattanooga Dental Studio!
