invisalign Q & A

Can orthodontics improve my oral health?

Yes. While many people think of orthodontic treatment in terms of the cosmetic benefits the treatment provides, the fact is, having straighter teeth can be very beneficial for oral health. Straighter teeth have fewer crevices for bacteria to hide, and caring for straight, properly-spaced teeth is also much easier, which means tooth decay and gum disease are less likely to occur. Plus, orthodontic treatment can help align the teeth and jaws to reduce the risk of developing jaw strain, chronic jaw pain and headache, uneven tooth wear and temporomandibular joint disorder.

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that uses smooth, clear plastic trays called aligners that are custom-fit for each patient. The aligners fit snugly over the teeth, and they’re worn in a specific sequence to help move teeth into their proper positions over time. The aligners eliminate the need for wires and brackets used in traditional braces.

What happens during Invisalign® treatment?

Invisalign® treatment begins with an evaluation of the patient’s needs followed by impressions and measurements, which are sent to a lab where the aligners will be created. The impressions are scanned into a computer that uses special computer-aided design (CAD) software to create a series of 3D models that show how the teeth need to move to come into alignment. Then, the plastic aligners are created using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) using those models. During treatment, each aligner is worn for about two weeks, after which it’s “swapped” for the next aligner in the sequence. Patients visit the office about once every six weeks for a “checkup.” Most treatments can be completed in less than two years. Aligners are removed for eating, brushing and flossing, and they’re virtually invisible while they’re being worn.

Is Invisalign® right for me?

Invisalign® can be a great option for correcting lots of orthodontic problems, but it’s not always the ideal solution. Prior to treatment, a comprehensive assessment will be performed to determine if Invisalign® is the best treatment option or if another type of orthodontic treatment might be a better choice.
