COMMON DENTAL PROBLEMS

Dental problems are some of the most common health problems in adults, but our Chattanooga dentists are well-equipped to treat them. If you think you may be suffering from any of these dental issues, we can help.

TOOTH DECAY & CAVITIES

Perhaps the most common dental health problem of all – and in fact, one of the most common health problems in general – is dental decay. Dental decay occurs when bacteria and plaque break down the outer structure of the tooth, weakening the enamel and eventually forming a hole called a cavity or dental carry. Cavities start when naturally-occurring bacteria break down leftover foods and sugars into acids, which slowly corrode tooth enamel and cause decay. The best way to fight dental decay is oral hygiene, but if cavities do form, we offer a variety of treatments like tooth-colored fillings.

ENAMEL EROSION

Another common and closely-linked problem is enamel erosion. Acids in foods like citrus fruit and drinks like soda can weaken and corrode enamel, eventually causing the outer layer of enamel on the teeth to thin. Have you ever tried putting a chicken bone in a glass of soda for a week and seeing how it grows soft and weak? The same thing can happen to tooth enamel. This makes teeth more vulnerable to decay and other dental problems. Erosion can be prevented by avoiding acidic foods and drinks, and we can help reverse the effects through fluoride treatments.

GUM DISEASE

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is one of the most common dental issues for adults. Gum disease is a progressive condition that starts when bacteria infect the gums, causing them to become red, swollen, and inflamed in a condition known as gingivitis. While gingivitis is mild and easily manageable, without treatment, periodontal disease can progress to periodontitis and chronic periodontitis: serious, aggressive infections that can eventually cause tooth and bone loss.

TMJ (JAW PAIN)

Another common dental problem, especially for adults, is temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly known as TMJ or TMD. TMJ can be caused by orthodontic problems, stress, or a host of other issues, and anyone familiar with the jaw aches and headaches of the condition knows how difficult it can be to manage. At our practice, we offer a variety of therapies and treatments to help alleviate TMJ pain and promote healthy jaw function.
